"Forgive Me First" is a piano ballad about the hardest apology, the one you owe yourself. It walks through vanity, anger and jealousy, and doesn't try to win against any of them. Instead it lets the ego take its coat and go, and finds something plain and true underneath. The chorus carries the whole idea: you don't have to win to be whole, and there is a strength hidden in the weakness you finally admit. Built from solo piano to a full final chorus with drums, strings and choir, one breath of silence before it breaks open. Part of the 99 Songs of Love, Peace and Rebellion project.
Forgive Me First
I built a name I had to feed a finer man than what I need I polished him and called him mine and left the real one far behind vanity, my steady guest always hungry, never blessed
But tonight I let the mask come down and I say it to the mirror, out loud
Forgive me, me – for all I tried to be for the pride and the pretty lies I sold forgive me, me – for every sin I keep for the anger I kept cold I don't have to win to be whole there's a strength in the weakness I finally show
And jealousy, my oldest friend counting what the others have again it kept me sharp, it kept me small tonight I let it go – and I don't fall
Tonight I let the mask come down and I say it to the mirror, out loud
Forgive me, me – for all I tried to be for the pride and the pretty lies I sold forgive me, me – for every sin I keep for the anger I kept cold I don't have to win to be whole there's a strength in the weakness I finally show
Let the ego take its coat and go let the character believe its show underneath there's something plain and true and it's been waiting years for you
Forgive me, me – for all I tried to be for the pride and the pretty lies I sold forgive me, me – for every sin I keep for the anger I kept cold I don't have to win to be whole there's a strength in the weakness I finally show
Forgive me, me... and finally, peace
