"Lặng lẽ" means "quietly" in Vietnamese. The song is about the hands nobody looks at: a country rising fast, and the ones who carry it. It moves between two places at once, a Vietnamese city growing before sunrise and a quiet apartment building in Germany where a neighbour of twenty years is never once asked in. Built on a Vietnamese V-pop and bolero blend with đàn bầu, đàn tranh and pentatonic melodies, it is light on the surface and heavy underneath. Lặng lẽ, but not invisible. Part of the 99 Songs of Love, Peace and Rebellion project.
Lặng Lẽ
The city climbs before the sun cranes and coffee, one by one we build it fast, we build it tall and never stop to see it all
And the ones who raised us sit alone in a house the young have outgrown the tower rises, the gap grows wide nobody looks at the hands that tried
Lặng lẽ, lặng lẽ we rise, we rise, and no one sees lặng lẽ, lặng lẽ the hands that built it, quietly
A man next door for twenty years quiet hands, no souvenirs we share a wall, a stair, a street and never once sit down to speak
He builds it fast, he builds it tall and no one stops to see it all
Lặng lẽ, lặng lẽ we rise, we rise, and no one sees lặng lẽ, lặng lẽ the hands that built it, quietly
Bridge
Twenty years, one wall, one name I never said so let me finally say it – come, sit down, share the bread (Zwanzig Jahre, eine Wand, ein Name, den ich nie sagte also lass es mich endlich sagen – komm, setz dich, teil das Brot)
Final Chorus
Lặng lẽ, lặng lẽ we rise, we rise, and no one sees lặng lẽ, lặng lẽ the hands that built it, quietly
Outro – đàn bầu alone
Lặng lẽ... but not invisible (Leise... aber nicht unsichtbar)
