Ake Ake Ake ("Forever and Ever") is a haka, the fierce side of Māori culture. Stomping feet, shouted unison, the pūkāea war trumpet. It is the chant of resistance: what was taken will not be given back quietly, the land will not be sold, the mana stands. "Ake Ake Ake" was the battle cry of New Zealand's great protest marches. Together with "Tūrangawaewae", these two songs reveal the immense range of one culture that most of the world reduces to a rugby ritual. This is an invitation: a musical journey of discovery.
