"Cuando el Suelo Tiembla" (when the ground trembles) plays on two meanings at once: the earthquake that shakes the walls, and the political tremor that shakes a country. Above, they argue and change the law; down on the corner, people already know what to do. Cumbia is the answer, born on Colombia's Caribbean coast from African, Indigenous and Spanish roots, carried by the poorest, once looked down on, now the heartbeat of a nation. Built on tambor alegre, llamador and guacharaca, the song is festive and defiant at once. And in the bridge, the rhythm packs its suitcase and travels. Part of the 99 Songs of Love, Peace and Rebellion project.
